Game: DERELIKT
Developer: Visuwyg
Where I found it: I don't remember
This is an atmospheric FPS game. I have no idea why I decided to try it, I guess I just got curious about it and it looked well made. I spent most of the first few minutes walking around, exploring the spaceship instead of going where I was supposed to go, and the game builds its atmosphere well enough, there's a bunch of logs you can read that expose the situation with writing that I would describe as of average to bad quality, and it seems like a good enough premise for a game.
Eventually you get your weapon and the game starts properly with aliens attacking. Combat is of average quality, it's not bad, but it's not particularly good either, the juice is not quite all there and the rules of when enemies do damage to you also seem dubious, e.g. facehuggers jump to attack you, but they also deal constant damage if you're near them at all. I believe the correct behavior should be, they jump and deal damage, and when you're near they only deal damage when they actually do an attack, but whatever.
I was already kind of not enjoying the game, and then I got to a point where I needed a password, and I had read a note in the previous room that said 1234 was the password, so I type 1234 and that's not the password. I go back to read the note and there's actually a second page where the person says, ah, I changed the password to the numbers on top of these four slabs of concrete in ascending order in the so and so room. So I have to climb some ladders and jump on top of the four slabs of concrete so I can see the numbers and then go open the door.
This was my breaking point and I stopped playing right here. I think this type of "gameplay" is insulting and I don't want to spend time doing meaningless stuff like this in a video game. I could have accepted it better if the "puzzle" wasn't presented to me in such a retarded way too, it's just not a good way of doing things. The way the game exposes its lore has a similar problem in that it's too... I can hear the developer speaking to me instead of the game itself. In any case, this game was absolutely not for me.
