Oh yea, it occurs to me I have not actually spoken about what I think of the fact that the AI can help make games so easily now. In general, I think it's good. It follows from Competition isn't real that I think more people being able to make better games benefits everyone, I genuinely believe this and it has not changed. The cases where competition is real, similar games released at similar times, might be made slightly worse by AI, but I also think game variety will increase, therefore these will probably nullify each other. It also follows from Steam AI Score that I believe Valve has/will have the tools to keep up with the increase and keep surfacing quality products. And then there's the fact that all the "Claude made this in one prompt" posts are kind of like, okay, that's pretty cool, but you still have to spend the long tail of caring about the details to make the game shippable. If you've been following this site for a while now you should know that most of the job is just that, being autistically obsessive about the details and making sure everything feels right. Will the robot be able to get more and more right over time? Yes, and that's good, but you'll still need to assert your will so that it does your actual artistic vision. There's also the fact that the AI will get better first on details that are legible, things like visual effects, juice, models, environment, etc, but will get better last, if it does, on details that reveal themselves over time in the context of a single project, like is this game actually fun, balance issues, pivots into new directions because the current one isn't working, and so on. Overall I'm pretty excited about the rate of progress and that the future will allow me to more easily bring my visions to life.
