What the Chinese are thinking here likely has to do with commoditizing your complement given their disadvantages on compute, but I do agree with Tenobrus generally. As these models increase in capability I don't think it's really questionable that they'll be able to do more and more damage. Anthropic believes this damage to be eventually extremely high, I believe so as well, although probably less than them, but if things continue as they are, with Chinese and other open models catching up so fast, it's seemingly only a matter of time until this debate is settled in actual reality rather than abstract land. Either way, the future looks bright for anyone who wants more intelligence at reasonable prices!
