Many comments on this ad, I disagree with most of them. Anthropic seems to be the only company modelling the future they're building seriously and acting in accordance with said future. The future is scary, and it should scare you (a little), and we should ask hard questions about it. It's easy to read Anthropic's actions if you simply believe they believe what they say they believe, as, if they do, it's obvious that the responsible thing to do is to act as they're acting, i.e. prepare the present for the scary future as much as possible. I am not sure why most people online seem to have trouble reading them. Especially when the people who spend all their time saying you should get out of the permanent underclass, that we should go full speed, that we should conquer the light cone, go on to then recoil at the mere depiction of getting that progress wrong? Those people are not serious, Anthropic seems serious.
Now that I think of it, I actually kind of understand why people can't read it. As many people, upon interacting with me for a while, come to believe that I'm joking about most of the things I say and do, they cannot believe that someone would be that way and be so upfront about it, perhaps they've never met someone that honest and serious about their ideas before, so when they see it for real they can't parse it. That's probably part of what's happening here, and another part is just people being blinded by concepts like freedom, such as with the recent GeoHot post.
