Summary
Design-theory session continuing directly from Micro/Meso/Macro: joined Richard Ngo's "Why I'm not a Bayesian" with the unbreakable-meso discussion, built the exam-side genealogy companion to the card-TD map — companion document published at a327ex.com/emergent-exam-genealogy (source: E:/a327ex/reference/emergent-exam-genealogy.md) — designed SNKRX's authored-and-collapsible mode portfolio (branches 1–4), detailed the card-TD's emergent exam (branch 6, then parked), and translated [REDACTED#2: lore] into the SNKRX gameplay framework.
Ngo's Bayesianism essay × unbreakable meso (the junction):
- Central identification: a "broken"/solved game is a game whose epistemology has become Bayesian. Ngo's claim that Bayesianism is "a special case... where we've already constructed all relevant models and just need to decide between them" is the formal definition of game collapse — explication = the community finishing model construction; the wiki IS the enumerated hypothesis space.
- The session's spec ("optimal policy learnable by a nervous system but not writable") is literally Ngo's semantic-view argument: embodied knowledge is model-shaped, articulable knowledge is proposition-shaped; the gut is the neural network whose weights can't be extracted as propositions. Tier lists = reductionist truth assignment; they fail when card-value is nebulous (holistic, context-dependent — fuzzy truth).
- New critique of the prior session's proposals — the method-wiki hole: continuous parameters defeat the value-wiki but not the method-wiki. Parameter estimation within a known model family is the Bayesian special case; the wiki prints the inference procedure instead of the values (GTO is a method, not a hand table; TFT rolling odds). Proposal C (unidentified units) collapses one level up.
- Deeper cut: the fairness rule "publish the distribution, seal the sample" is itself the collapse mechanism — a published distribution is a pre-enumerated hypothesis space. Repair: publish the RULES (syntactic), let distributions be EMERGENT from visible dynamics (semantic) — projective-plane example: tiny axioms, infinitely many models. In the ecology, no distribution exists anywhere; "there is no deck until the dynamics deal it."
- Why irreducibility was the right answer: irreducible systems' behavior space can't be exhausted by any syntactic procedure — the player stays permanently in model construction (Conway's Life glider/gun vocabulary is open-ended). Aleatory depth with published distributions is Bayesian-ready from birth (poker's partial collapse).
- Skill in such games = verisimilitude not correctness (Asimov scale); the "luck isn't real" gym requires fuzzy truth — solved games snap truth-values binary. The game is a trainer for the epistemology Ngo can't formalize; the designer doesn't need the formalism (runs grade models holistically without defining verisimilitude).
- Derived instrument used throughout the rest of the session: the imagined-wiki test — collapse-resistant to the degree the hypothetical wiki must be a methods textbook rather than a value table; unbreakable only if even the methods textbook goes stale.
Non-fixed exam genealogy (deliverable: reference/emergent-exam-genealogy.md + 3 inline diagrams):
- Dual question to the card-TD map's "what randomizes the build feed?": "who authors the exam?" Six answers: (1) authored once/fixed, (2) sampled from a distribution (Rogue→Spelunky→Monster Train), (3) scheduled by the player (StS routing, Against the Storm, heat, RoR's difficulty clock), (4) concealed director (rubber-banding→RE4→L4D→RimWorld storytellers), (5) other minds (wars-TD sends→auto-battlers→BRs), (6) a visible simulation (emergent).
- Headline finding: branch 6 has no phylogeny — it's islands, not a tree. Nobody iterated on anybody for five decades. Root cause: the Wright divorce (1989) — SimCity kept emergence and deliberately dropped grading ("software toys"); sim-building and challenge-grading skills split into separate genres. Dwarf Fortress (2006) is the one re-merge.
- Islands walked: Hamurabi 1968 (dynamics as the oldest digital exam), M.U.L.E. 1983 (reflexive market), UO 1997 (ecology eaten by players — unbounded extraction time), DF 2006 (cascades/tantrum spirals; "losing is fun" as cultural variance-acceptance tech; legibility bill unpaid), Creeper World 2009 (enemy as fluid field; visibility achieved, irreducibility not), AI War 2009 (visible AIP scalar), KSP 2011 (the integrability trap — deliberately solvable patched-conics physics collapsed into transfer calculators), Factorio (pollution→evolution formula wiki'd), RimWorld (the retreat to a director + wealth scalar; "wealth management" = thermostat meta), Cities: Skylines traffic (the most-played unnamed emergent exam; methods wiki that can't solve YOUR city), OTC 2016 (prices respond to your own trades — self-reference), ONI 2017 (gold-standard overlays; blueprint collapse/SPOM), Rain World 2017 (purest agent ecology; zero instruments → read as noise; cult survival), Noita 2019 (the two-layer split: explicable wand layer + irreducible physics exam), counterfeits (Frostpunk = weather theming over authored schedule; Vampire Survivors = chaos theming over timetable).
- Collapse taxonomy: thermostat (scalar coupling), calculator (integrable dynamics), blueprint (self-authored determinism), answer key (authored maps), starvation (UO), noise (no instruments). Survivors: field guide games (agent ecologies) and ticker games (reflexive markets) — both have distributions that are generated, not authored.
- Convergence organs for an emergent-exam SNKRX/card-TD: ONI instruments, DF/RW populations, Creeper field-enemy, UO-inverted run-as-containment-vessel (the roguelike run bounds extraction — enabling tech, not compromise), Noita's split, MULE/OTC shop-ecology coupling, TD chassis commitment. New idea surfaced: couple the shop to the ecology — build feed and exam as two readouts of one dynamical system (repairs session proposal D).
SNKRX — authored, solvable, collapsing well (user: "completely authored gameplay that can be solved eventually, it just has to be good"; modes: pre-run draft + classic; others undecided):
- Reframe: the collapse arc is content; design it like a difficulty curve. Nice collapse = long conveyor, repertoire end-state (not a degenerate line), arrival feels like mastery.
- Branch 1: fixed checkpoint bosses at known waves — a fixed exam is what makes a random feed readable as a problem (StS/Monster Train structure). Secondary: authored puzzle/scenario mode.
- Branch 2: sampled wave pools per 5-wave band; draft mode = draft the POOL, not the snake — pre-run draft defines which units the in-run shop may offer (player-authored feed distribution; draft picks are priors, shop picks are updates; fixes blind-bet pre-commitment without violating the pre-run spec).
- Branch 3: wave contracts (choose next wave from 2-3 specified options with reward differentials) as a third-mode identity; ascension ladder as the collapse pacemaker — each tier authored to invalidate the dominant lines of the tier below (pre-written balance patches the player applies); gauntlet wrapper with stakes; daily seed.
- Branch 4: concealed directors rejected flat (attribution); publish the director — TFT loss-streak gold as the proof that a published director becomes a strategy surface; pity timers, catch-up economics, all printed.
- Cross-cutting principle: own the codex — ship the bestiary/odds/pools in-game, revealed progressively, so the game controls its own explication rate; full knowledge feels like completing the atlas, not reading spoilers.
Card-TD — branch 6 in detail (user verdict: "The Card-TD idea is very good, but let's park it here"):
- The wilds: a visible biome at the spawn side holding 4-5 authored species in food-web roles (grazers/predators/scavengers/burrowers/apex); Lotka-Volterra-with-harvesting ticks between waves; species authored, populations grown ("climate authored, weather grown").
- Waves as emigration: overcrowding pressure spills raiders over the wall; wave composition = f(visible population state). Run arc emerges: trickle → oscillations → whatever you bred.
- Four coupling channels: kills are harvest; leaks are fertilizer (a raider reaching your core returns fed, boosting breeding — triage IS breeding policy: "whatever you can't kill, you're farming"); corpses feed scavengers (kill depth matters; corpse-burning cards); forward building drains carrying capacity (territory as habitat pressure).
- Forecast structure: next wave manifest exact; waves 2-3 as trends — structurally uncertain because they depend on the player's own undetermined performance (self-prediction as the fog; zero concealment). Apex arrival emergent but readable; finale = the Bloom — fight the biome you bred all run.
- Trap audit: population vector not scalar (no aggregate threat meter); LV past the integrability line; per-run rolled starting climate shown on screen (blueprint-proof, fairness-clean); emigration caps bound the blast radius. Tuning via the emoji-ball-battles headless balance-harness methodology pointed at the biome (scripted-policy climate sweeps).
- Open dials batched: biome presentation (diegetic + panel), leak-feed severity, territory coupling in/out, Bloom vs survive-N, species count 4 vs 5.
