I used to be extremely on top of it and know all the details about what you "had" to do to be successful in the market, but 5 years have passed and I'd like to update myself. Most of what I did involved collecting data on all Steam games and writing various scripts to answer questions I had and understand trends better. I'd like you to do some of that work today, however, I'd also like you to generate most research directions and questions and then useful answers that exploit openings in the market that other people might not have noticed. To do this, I'd like you to avoid reading ANY AND ALL Steam marketing research blog posts, such as howtomarketagame and similar. This isn't because those blogs aren't good, but it's because their own analysis is already what's on the minds of every indie developer, and I'd like insights that other people likely have not found, which means your analysis has to be fundamentally different from theirs. - SteamSpy bulk crawl — whole catalog at 1,000 games/min (their rate limit). Owners buckets, playtime medians, dev/publisher, CCU. ETA ~1.5h.
- Steam search index crawl — the whole games catalog at ~2,000 games/min via the infinite-scroll endpoint. This turned out richer than expected: release date, review count + positive %, price/discount, platforms, and the top ~7 tag IDs per game embedded right in the HTML — so tag-space analysis needs no per-game calls at all. ETA ~1.5–2h.
Queued (scripts written, launch when the skeleton lands):
- Review histogram crawl — monthly review rollups since launch for every game with ≥20 reviews, best-first. This powers the trajectory/long-tail analysis.
- appdetails crawl — features (demo, achievements, controller support, DLC count, languages), dev/publisher, for all reviewed games plus a 6K random sample of unreviewed ones for base rates. This one's the slow crawler (~1 req/1.6s is the unofficial ceiling), so it runs all day and analyses use whatever depth has accumulated.

551:Despite everything, difficulty complaints are mostly fair and I have a plan to deal with them, which is the game’s roguelite update. Essentially, an easy way that will allow me more freedom in balancing the game is to make it so that units die permanently when they die. Right now when units die they get revived, which makes me have to do fairly strong enemies that can 1 shoot you to keep things interesting.

This HN post was similar in views to the most popular [social media post for BYTEPATH](https://www.reddit.com/r/pathofexile/comments/7zu9vz/i_made_a_small_game_inspired_by_poes_passive/) (about 30K total views), but it didn’t generate nearly as many sales because it wasn’t so focused on the specific audience the game is made for and it also links to a GitHub page rather than the Steam page.

The art-independent measure: numeric depth claims in store descriptions
I parsed the raw store descriptions of all 5,596 window hits plus the random failure (4,000) and mid (1,879) samples for numeric content claims — "120+ items", "40 playable characters", "over 300 skills" (nouns: items/weapons/upgrades/abilities/passives/characters/classes/relics/cards/spells/perks/skills/units/heroes/artifacts/talents/augments/builds/traits/runes, numbers 10–5000):
- Prevalence gradient (all games): failures 3% → mids 4% → hits 7% make any numeric claim.
- Genre-controlled (build-tag games only): failures 8% → mids 13% → hits 17%; claims totaling ≥100: failures 3% → hits 10%. Within build genres, hits advertise numeric depth ~2× as often, and large depth ~3× as often.
- Dose-response among hits (median est. revenue): no claim $219K · total 10–99 $257K · total 100–299 $193K · total 300+ $595K (build-tag hits: $418K, n=50). Flat through the middle, then the 300+ bucket nearly triples the median. The games that can honestly claim PoE-scale content mass are the outsized winners.
- Strongest nouns (hit vs fail prevalence): characters 3.0×, items 2.6×, weapons 2.4×. "N characters" is the single strongest depth claim.
- Within idlers: 8% of hit idlers make build claims vs 2% of failed idlers — the Gnorp-style "idler with builds" is the winning end of that genre too.
Causality caveat: a claim is downstream of actually having the content, which is downstream of dev time — this says "content mass wins," not "write 300+ in your description."
What this means through your constraints
Build depth is the right horse, and it's art-orthogonal in specific spots. The whole build universe outperforms, but at your price band (≤$10) most RPG-family tags collapse to 2–4% — deep RPGs are premium-priced, bigger-scope products. The build genres that stay alive under $10 are exactly the systems-dense/short-session ones: Bullet Heaven 31.9%, Loot 23.0%, Roguelike Deckbuilder 18.3%, Auto Battler 10.5%, and the co-op roguelite pairs (26–33%).
Loot + Idler is the live gold rush: 42.6% overall, 36.6% at ≤$10, supply up 34× and still converting. That's "build-depth idler" — loot drops, gear, passives, numbers going up — squarely at the intersection of the build-depth lens and yesterday's idler finding, with the Desktop-Companion caveat that 34× supply growth means the window is measured in months, so it's a ride-the-mechanic-not-the-fad situation.
The "Loot" tag itself looks like an underused positioning lever: 33.6% overall, 23% at ≤$10, outsiders at 21.6% (2.5× the outsider baseline), supply only 2×. Games about acquiring build pieces — which is what you make — can carry this tag regardless of genre shell.
The 300+ content-mass effect is your old thesis vindicated: BYTEPATH's 900-node tree and "small long games" is literally the profile of the $595K bucket. The tension is time — honest 300+ content in 1–3 months requires combinatorial/procedural depth rather than hand-authored mass, which is your specific strength (SNKRX made ~40 units × classes read as hundreds of builds). "N characters/classes" being the strongest nouns favors the SNKRX-style roster structure over flat item lists.
Avoid: Perma Death (8.1%) and Traditional Roguelike (11.9%) — the hardcore-roguelike corner is the weak end of the build universe; Card Game without the roguelike qualifier (14.3%, outsiders 4.8% — publisher/IP territory); anything Turn-Based Tactics-shaped at low price (2.4%).
The cleanest composite the data points at, staying inside your model: a $5.99–7.99 loot/roster-driven incremental-or-autobattler hybrid with an honest "40 characters / 200+ items"-scale claim, tagged into Loot + (Idler or Auto Battler or Roguelike Deckbuilder), CN/RU/PT-BR localized — every column of that spec sits in the top decile of its respective analysis.

Mostly correct, and the BYTEPATH-incremental idea is honestly the single best-fit project in the entire dataset — it hits the art-gate exception, the no-low-price-penalty niche, the build-claim effect (900-node tree is an honest "900+" claim), and it's a sequel-shaped release into your existing follower base, which is where your 57.6%-bucket advantage bites hardest. Nodebuster at $2.99/$1.1M and Gnorp at $6.99/$1.8M bracket exactly what that project looks like when it works. If Nodebuster really does descend aesthetically from BYTEPATH, you'd be reclaiming your own territory five years later.
But you forgot two things, and one of them is the most important finding of the whole day:
1. "Same deal as before" is the one phrase the data argues against. A roguelite with lots of items/characters, at $5, positioned as an action roguelite, is the 14.4%-tag at its weakest price point — 7.4% at ≤$10, in a field of 2,347 releases over three years. The mechanical checklist you listed (achievements, controller, languages, price, no demo) moves you a few points; the shell and lead tags move you from midfield into the top decile. The same build-depth game jumps to a different bucket depending on what it presents as: turn-based roguelite 46%, roguelite+co-op 47–55% (26–33% even under $10), roguelike deckbuilder 38.9% (18.3% under $10), loot-led 33.6% (23% under $10). Build depth is the engine; the positioning is the multiplier. So the correction is: not "roguelite with lots of builds, same as before" but "roguelite with lots of builds wearing one deliberate differentiating shell" — and the co-op numbers are strong enough that it's worth deciding consciously whether netcode is ever going on Anchor's roadmap, because that's the single largest opening that fits your genre skills.
2. The art gate comes back the moment you leave the incremental lane. This is the asymmetry between your two project ideas. BYTEPATH-incremental: art-immune (27% hit rate at blind-scored tier-≤2 art, and the niche's winners mostly don't have good art). Action roguelite: art ≤2 was the 6% cell in my sample even inside the niche, versus 83% for tier-4 art. **Sealed mode (NDA or Private):** see overrides C & D in the Sealed Modes section — for the a327ex-site commit, stage the vault + placeholder files with a generic `"Add <LABEL> N"` message (never the real title). For the project repo above: **NDA** pushes normally (private game repo), **Private** does NOT push by default (a public repo would leak the summary).
**Failure handling:** if either push fails, the other still happens. Local commits stay intact, so the user can re-push manually once they've fixed whatever blocked it. Don't roll back; the committed state on disk is the source of truth.
## Step 6.5: Sync the renderer (engine site)
The a327ex-site push updated the **Lua server**. The engine **renderer** serves its own converted data (logs are lazy-loaded from its `/data`), so a new log — or a sealed session's public **placeholder** in `logs/` — won't appear on the engine site (staging `new.a327ex.com` now, `a327ex.com` after cutover) until the renderer is synced. Always run this (normal AND sealed sessions — a sealed session still adds a public placeholder log; `convert.lua` converts `logs/`, never `vault/`):

Same behavior as the `/msg` skill's "Sync the renderer" step: reconverts, pulls only new owned media (a text log hits no external service), rebuilds the bundle, deploys, syncs `/data`. **Non-aborting** + idempotent. Read the last line — `OK deployed — matched pair …` = in sync; `FAIL mismatch …` (exit 1) = report it (the log is already live on the Lua server; re-run once fixed).

## Notes
- **Frontmatter is non-negotiable.** Every log file MUST have `Title:` and `Date:` at the top. Enforced at write time in step 4. The backfill script is a safety net, not a substitute.

Correct, and this actually reverses what I told you a moment ago — I was wrong there, good catch.
Running /end-session is purely an archival action: it writes the summary, converts the transcript to markdown, commits, and pushes the log to a327ex.com. It doesn't terminate the conversation, close anything, or kill processes. Nothing about it "ends" the session in the runtime sense.
So the actual behavior:
- If you leave the tab open — the conversation stays live and the background crawlers (histogram, appdetails) keep running until they finish on their own or you close the tab. In that case there's nothing for a next session to "pick up"; they'll just complete here. You could even come back to this same tab later and query the finished data.
- If you close the tab / quit the app — that's what actually terminates the host process and kills the crawlers. Then the next session resumes them from their SQLite checkpoints by re-running the scripts.
My earlier "the tasks will end and the next session picks them up" conflated the two — the skill doesn't end them; closing the tab does. So the honest version is: run /end-session whenever you want the log written (it's safe and changes nothing about the running work), and the crawlers' fate depends entirely on whether you close the tab, not on the skill.
